Mental health crisis? Text 988: Service creates powerful new support path in Arkansas
- April 14, 2025

In a groundbreaking development for mental health support, Arkansas’s new 988 text service is transforming how people reach out during crisis moments. While open to everyone, the response from young people has been extraordinary.
In just 10 days since launching the text feature, the Arkansas Criss Center had nearly matched its previous annual call volume from youth.
“What we’re witnessing is extraordinary,” said Luke See, executive director of the Arkansas Crisis Center. “The texting service has completely transformed how people, especially our youth, reach out for help. We’re about to exceed our entire previous year’s volume of youth contacts in just 10 days – it’s staggering and shows just how crucial this accessible format is for those who prefer texting over calling.”
What is 988?
988 is a lifeline that meets everyone where they are – through call, text, or online chat at 988lifeline.org. Available 24/7, trained counselors stand ready to help anyone experiencing challenges, big or small. You define what a crisis is for you – whether it’s thoughts of suicide, substance use concerns, emotional distress, or simply feeling overwhelmed. There’s no wrong reason to reach out.
“This isn’t just another helpline – it’s a revolution in crisis support,” said Josh Gonzales, president of the Arkansas Crisis Center Board of Directors. “The overwhelming response proves what we’ve long suspected: Texting isn’t just a preference for many; it’s a vital lifeline that could mean the difference between silence and reaching out for help.”
