The start of a new year is a perfect time to add small, consistent changes and healthier habits into your daily life to help you stay happy, healthy and well.

Practical healthy habits

Healthy habits don’t need to be uncomfortable or only focused on physical health. People who have joined our Blue & You Fitness Challenge may already know that wellness encompasses your entire self. While the mind and body are separate, they work together to create our whole health. It is important to develop habits that have a positive impact on both your physical and mental well-being. Here are some tips for making meaningful changes to your daily routine:

  • Be realistic: When creating healthy habits, make sure you have the necessary time and resources.
  • Create a schedule: A daily schedule allows time to manage regular obligations and focus on wellness habits. As the schedule becomes routine, adding healthy habits becomes easier.
  • Find healthy alternatives: Substitute healthier versions of the foods you enjoy, like choosing a protein bar instead of candy.
  • Meditate: Meditation or breathing exercises can reduce stress and anxiety. According to the Mayo Clinic, meditation can give you a sense of calm, peace and balance that can benefit your emotional well-being and overall health.
  • Move more: Adding more movement or exercise improves your physical and mental health. Find a movement you enjoy – walking, exercising, stretching, etc. – and schedule time for it daily.
  • Get a hobby: Learning new skills can keep your brain healthy and reduce stress. Plant a garden, knit or create art.
