A Personal Welcome When It Matters Most

Open enrollment for our members on individual, family and Medicare plans is always an important time of year, but the 2025 season tested us all. Changes to the enhanced tax credits, plan structures, and coverage options created uncertainty for many people who simply wanted clarity and peace of mind. During the most recent open enrollment period, more than 5,000 Arkansans walked into our ArkansasBlue Welcome Centers needing guidance and reassurance.

Since 2010, our Welcome Centers have offered something increasingly rare in this automated world — the chance to sit across from a real person who listens, explains and cares. People don’t come to our Welcome Centers just to buy a policy. They come for clarity. They come during life transitions: getting married, welcoming a new baby, transitioning a young adult off their parents’ coverage, starting a business, taking guardianship of a loved one, or preparing for retirement. Our team members meet people where they are, offering guidance on health insurance options and compassion during some of life’s most challenging moments.

Here are just a few examples of how our Welcome Center teams have supported our members through challenging decisions.

For more than a decade, Mrs. Patricia (Glee) Thompson has relied on her local Welcome Center and Retail Sales Representative Michael McLaughlin to help navigate her coverage needs. When she adopted her three grandchildren, her insurance needs changed dramatically. Year after year, she returns to review coverage not just for herself, but for her family. She said she couldn’t manage on her own without that trusted relationship. That kind of long‑term trust doesn’t happen by accident. It’s built through consistency, compassion, and taking the time to truly understand someone’s life.

When Adam Mitchell left a 30-year career to start his own business, he turned to the Pine Bluff Welcome Center and Retail Sales Representative Beverly Gray for help navigating the transition from employer coverage to individual coverage. What stood out wasn’t just the technical expertise, but the reassurance he felt knowing someone was walking through the process with him. He described that service as “above and beyond,” and it made all the difference during a pivotal life change.

Ms. Christie Simco turned to her local Welcome Center after retiring and starting her own embroidery business. As her income and business grew, so did the complexity of her health insurance coverage needs. When health challenges required her to seek specialized care out of state, she knew she had an advocate who understood her history and would help her find the right coverage. That long‑term relationship is built on trust, consistency, and genuine care.

Bob Hartmeier, in Fort Smith, visited the Welcome Center while navigating guardianship of his grandson. The situation involved multiple states and unexpected complications, but the Welcome Center team tracked the details, navigated the hurdles, and reassured him at every step. He later described the experience as feeling “like family,” and the relief that followed made clear just how much that support mattered.

And there are hundreds of additional examples like these that are helping make health insurance accessible. Simpler. Human.

Open enrollment may be our busiest season, but every day, our Welcome Centers answer questions, solve problems, and build relationships that span generations. For many of our members, our Welcome Centers are often the difference between staying insured and falling through the cracks.  When members need help, nothing replaces sitting down with someone who knows their name, understands their story, and is committed to helping them move forward with peace of mind. That’s what sets Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield apart — and I couldn’t be prouder of the people who make it happen.
