Welcome, baby! How to enroll your baby in health insurance

Before first steps and first birthdays comes a very important milestone in your newborn’s care – enrolling them in health insurance. This will ensure your newborn’s care is covered from birth. As you settle into your new life with baby, let us help you get the coverage they need.

 

When Do I Enroll My Baby?

Make sure to enroll them within the first 60 days of life so that their coverage is backdated to the day of their birth. That way, their delivery and newborn care claims can be covered by health insurance.

How Do I Enroll My Baby?

If your health insurance plan is through your employer, reach out to your organization’s group administrator.

If you have an individual or family plan that you purchased independently, give us a call at 800-392-2583, visit one of our ArkansasBlue Welcome Centers or contact your external agent if you have one.

If you’re on an ARHOME plan with us through DHS, you’ll need to contact DHS about getting an ARKids First plan for your baby. Visit access.arkansas.gov or call 855-372-1084.

What’s Covered?

Newborn nursery care
Your baby can stay with you in the hospital up to five days with your doctor’s recommendation.

Other baby-related care that’s covered

• Hospital stay coverage
• Circumcision or other surgeries
• Medications and lab work
• Care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
• Elective procedures
• Vaginal delivery: up to 48 hours
• Cesarean section: up to 96 hours

After these timeframes, any new claims for your baby are no longer considered maternity-related.

 

As your baby grows, they will continue to need health insurance. It covers many preventive and other important healthcare services your child needs to stay healthy.
