Many people say a dog is man’s best friend, but for one Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield member, his new pup was a lifesaver.
Ashley Beegle and Julie Allen on Arkansas Blue Cross’s Behavioral Health Team were working with a member experiencing severe depression. John* was unable to work due to his seizures, debilitating migraines and post-traumatic stress disorder. He was also experiencing financial difficulty, causing further stress. John admitted to thoughts of suicide.
A new leash on life
During one check-in, John mentioned to Julie that he wished he had a dog to help combat his depression. Owning and caring for a pet is known to help many people deal with depression; for many, the calming touch of a pet can help alleviate stress and anxiety.
John had completed the paperwork to adopt a dog and even received his landlord’s approval to have one, but he encountered obstacles before he could adopt the dog he wanted from the shelter.
Ashley and Julie got to work, trying to remove those barriers to him getting the dog. Just in time for Christmas, they arranged for John to pick up his new friend. At the same time, Julie was also working with John to get his medication for depression and migraines approved.
Progress on two feet and four paws
With the help of his new pup and medications, Julie says John is a new person. His demeanor has changed dramatically, and he no longer talks of suicide. He is positive during their conversations and expresses hope that he will continue to recover and get back to work.
John credits his diminishing anxiety and depression to his furry friend and the team members from Arkansas Blue Cross who brought them together. He is managing his debilitating migraines with medication and feeling like himself again.
Do you need a case manager?
If you or someone you care about is facing a health issue, it can be overwhelming. A case manager can help by advocating on your behalf.
Case managers are experienced registered nurses who work directly with our members to make sure they receive the medical care they need as efficiently as possible. They work closely with members, their families, and their medical care providers to address each health issue from every angle. They reach out to members after surgery, find medical equipment and support services and help members learn how to care for themselves.
Call the customer service number on the back of your member ID card or contact us through the Blueprint Portal to connect with an RN case manager of your own.
